The Heat would like to welcome three new players for the '07-'08 soccer year; Whitney, Ashleigh and Natalie.  These three girls all had a very strong tryout and will strengthen the team going forward.  Welcome ladies!

The Heat completed their spring seasonal play in 3rd place in the GCF U14/15 State Cup league.  The girls finished 3rd among all teams, finished 1st among U14 teams, and finished with the 2nd best overall goal differential.  This marked a dramatic improvement over their fall seasonal play.

The Heat capped off their spring '07 season with a 1-0 win against IUS U15.  The girls started very strong, generating many good combinations and scoring chances, but the poorly maintained field seemed to always have a bad bounce as a Heat player was about take a shot, or settle a ball inside the attacking 18.  Although the first half ended scoreless, the Heat had the better of play, and sensed it was just a matter of time.  The 2nd half saw more of the same, although IUS stepped up the physical play, and tried take the Heat out of their game.  Finally, with about 10 minutes to play, Sarah took matters into her own hands, and made a penetrating run, dribbling through two defenders and by the keeper to walk the ball into the goal to give the Heat all the margin they would need.

Heat run at State Cup ends in PKs!
The Heat girls faced the Plantation Eagles in the Sweet 16 round today in Wellington.  The first half was very evenly played, as both teams generated some good chances, but neither could find the net and the half ended scoreless.  Both teams picked up the intensity in the 2nd half and the Heat struck first, 7 minutes in, as Melody beat the Eagles keeper to the left corner to give the girls the lead.  Both teams had some good chances in the middle part of the half, but the net was elusive for both.  Finally, with just 4 minutes to play, the Eagles evened the score on a nice shot into the left corner of the Heat net.  70 minutes of regulation play ended 1-1, and the teams faced two more 10 minutes periods.  Both teams generated some good shots, but neither was able to capitalize.  After 90 minutes of grueling soccer, the two teams faced penalty kicks to decide the winner.  Plantation proved to be more accurate with their PK's and converted 4 to the Heat's 3, and the Eagles took the match and advanced to the quarterfinals, sending the Heat home disappointed, but proud of their overall showing in this elite tournament.

The Heat squared off against Spacecoast Storm today, a team that had beaten the Heat in their last match back in November.  Today's result would be different, however, as the girls came back from a 1-nil halftime deficit with "bookend" goals at the start and finish of the second half to seal a 2-1 victory.  A four pass combination in the first minute of the 2nd half tied the game as Gaby rocketed a perfectly placed shot from 25 yards that the Storm keeper could only watch sail just under the bar.  The next 33 minutes saw back and forth play with both teams getting good forward push, but neither able to generate any really good chances.  Then, in the final minute Gaby was taken down about 30 yards wide right of the goal.  On the free kick, Patricia placed a beautiful ball to the far post that Robin headed back across goal squarely on to Sarah's foot, and she beat the keeper with a shot into the back of the net to give the Heat the win.

The Heat faced the East Orange Lady Knights in GCF league play tonight on a cool and windy evening.  Going into a strong breeze in the 1st half, the girls had a number of good chances, with Melody finally converting from short range to put the Heat up 1-0 at the half.  With a helping wind in the 2nd half, the girls converted for 4 more goals, with Melody getting the hat trick and Sarah converting twice to put the Heat up 5-0 before East Orange was able to net a goal, as the Heat cruised to a 5-1 win.

Heat advance to Sweet 16 at State Cup!
The Maitland Heat girls made a strong showing at State Cup this weekend in Naples, winning two games and tying one to move on to the round of 16.  The girls barely missed winning their group, and thus, move on as their group's 2nd place qualifier.

Game 1 - The girls faced Kendall Hammocks out of Region A, a team the Heat had never played.  The team started strong with Sarah taking a wind-blown punt to goal and beating the Hammocks keeper.  KH came back to tie the score quickly, and the teams went into the half tied 1-1.  The Heat opened the second half on a perfectly executed set play on the opening kickoff as Taylor fed Megan who drove home a left-footed shot to give the Heat the lead in the first 10 seconds.  The Heat controlled play for the remainder of the game with Gaby netting the final goal with about 10 minutes to play, and the Heat took the game 3-1.

Game 2 - The girls faced East Lake out of Region C, a team that had beaten the Heat easily back in October. Today would be a different result.  With a strong wind blowing out of the south, both teams knew that scoring "with the wind" would be very important.  Going with the wind in the 1st half, the girls controlled much of the play, but couldn't find the net until the final 2 minutes of the half, when Kaitlyn outmuscled a defender and the keeper to give the Heat a 1-0 lead at the half.  East Lake had the wind in the 2nd half and was able to control much of the play.  But, a very strong Heat defense didn't give East Lake any good chances except a couple of direct free kicks opportunities that the defense, and big Taylor, easily thwarted, and the Heat took the match 1-nil, and thus clinched their trip to the sweet 16.

Game 3 - The girl's final game was for seeding purposes only as both the Heat, and their opponent from Sunrise had already clinched their spots in the next round.  The Heat needed a win, and Sunrise needed just a tie to finish as the group's top seed.  This game was played in even stronger winds than the previous day.  Both teams were strong defensively, with Sunrise generating some good chances, and controlling play with the wind in the second half.  However, after a scoreless first half, and nearly 20 minutes of scoreless play in the 2nd half, the lightning sirens went off as weather moved into the area.  After a nearly two hour delay, the game was declared a 0-0 draw.

April 3
The Heat faced local rival CFU in a mid-week GCF game tonight.  In a tale of two halves, the Heat had the better of play in the first half.  After giving up an early goal, the girls came back to even up the score about 30 minutes into the half, as Taylor made a nice cross to Gaby who easily punched a ball into an open net.  The failure to find the net a second time after a number of very good chances, however, would prove costly.  The second half was a different story as CFU stepped up their play and pressured the Heat with a number of good chances, finally putting one in the net about 10 minutes into the half to take a 2-1 lead.  The Heat had a few good opportunities to tie, but couldn't find the net for the equalizer, and CFU took the match by a score of 2-1.

The Heat faced OCS Strikers U15 today in a very physical, bruising match for both teams.  OCS opened the scoring about 15 minutes into the first half on a nice cross that was keenly placed into the net to give OCS a 1-nil lead.  The Heat struck back about 5 minutes later as Taylor, scoring her 3rd goal in as many games, placed a nice shot into the left corner of the net that the OCS keeper could only watch.  The rest of the game saw both teams attack and defend well.  The Heat had two great chances in the final minute, but a sure-handed OCS keeper was in good position to stop both shots, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

March
17
The Heat ran into a tough Central Brevard Cyclones team today, and lost a hard-fought game, 3-1.  The Cyclones struck first and took a 1-nil lead into the half.  The Heat struck back about 10 minutes into the 2nd half as Taylor made a penetrating run up the center of the Cyclones defense and beat the keeper into the right corner of the net to tie the score.  The Cyclones, however, stepped up their play and scored two more 2nd half goals as their speed and stamina (the Heat had only 11 players available) were too much for the Heat girls.

The Heat opened their spring '07 GCF league season with a solid 3-1 win vs. Ocala U15.  The girls started a bit slowly, giving up an early goal to the physical Ocala team.  However, the team settled down, with Sarah and Taylor netting nice shots to give the Heat a 2-1 lead at the half.  Melody closed out the game with about 15 minutes to play, converting a nice left-footed shot into the corner.

Disney tournament results...
The Heat had a successful showing at Disney, battling some tough teams, as well as frigid temperatures.  The girls won 3 straight preliminary round games, outscoring their opponents 13-0 to advance to the semifinals.  Of note was a convincing 4-0 win against New York East's 2nd ranked Massapequa Storm

The semifinal match was against Florida Premier out of Fort Myers.  This team had defeated the Heat 1-nil back in October.  Today's game was played much the same; a very physical match with neither team generating many good scoring chances.  FP finally netted a goal 15 minutes into the 2nd half to take the lead.  The Heat girls stepped up and applied good offensive pressure the rest of the way, but a stubborn FP defense held firm till the end and FP took the match by the same 1-0 score as the October game.

Ormond Beach tournament results...
The Heat girls opened the 2007 spring season by winning 1 and losing 2 at the Ormond Beach Challenge.  The team dropped the opening game 0-4 against the always strong and disciplined Tsunami team.  The girls then faced local rival CFU for the first time this year.  After falling behind on a nice CFU goal, Meagan B evened the match on a beautifully taken direct free kick from about 22 yards.  CFU was able to muster two more goals to win the match, as the Heat saw a number of good close-in chances fail to find netting.  Not to be discouraged, the team played their best game in their last match of the tournament against the the Pinellas Raiders.  Gaby found the net twice, and Sarah once, as the Heat dominated from start to finish in a 3-0 win.

Holiday Challenge tournament results...
The Heat closed out their fall season traveling to Melbourne for a "different" tournament experience.  Due to a lack of girls teams entries, the Heat chose to get some experience playing more physical, much faster boys teams in a combined U13 boys/ U14 girls division.  The Heat were joined in this grouping by one other U14 girls team from Spacecoat.

Game 1 and 4 vs. Spacecoast U14 girls: These two evenly matched teams battled for over two hours of scoreless soccer over two full games.  Both teams had numerous scoring chances, but neither could find the back of the net.  Finally, less than 1 minute into the first overtime of the final match, Spacecoast netted the decisive goal.  The Heat battled hard to the end, but Spacecoast held on for the victory.

Game 2 and 3 vs. IUS and Brevard U13 boys: These games were a great experience for the girls.  Both boys teams possessed speed the girls were not used to seeing.  Although the team failed to score in both games, the girls had plenty of chances, especially against Brevard, the stronger of the two teams.  Overall, the girls held their own against these two teams, and look forward to some future games in this "mixed", developmental format.

Playing their first game in a month, the Heat faced off against the state's 7th ranked Melbourne Beach Tsunami in a tune-up scrimmage for next weekend's tournament.  The girls started strong, and played Tsunami to a very close first half scoreless draw, with big Taylor coming up with a number of great saves in goal.  In a game very similar to their first meeting at the CFU tournament, Tsunami came out strong in the 2nd half and applied relentless pressure.  Tsunami came up with the go ahead goal with just 3 minutes to play, in a virtual repeat of the result from the first game.  However the final result would be different this time as the Heat came up huge in the final minute.  Melody took a long pass from Sarah and beat two Tsunami defenders, and the keeper to tie the score and earn the Heat a 1-1 draw.

Largo Invitional tournament results...
The Heat repeated their result from two weeks ago, winning two, and losing one at this weekend's Largo tournament.  Unfortunately, this was not good enough to advance to the finals, and the girls again went home empty handed of trophy hardware.

Game 1 saw the Heat start very slow as East Lake Arsenal struck for three first half goals and put the game out of reach before the half.  Although the girl's "woke up" in the 2nd half and outplayed East Lake, the halftime score held, and East Lake won the game 3-0.  As it turned out, this result effectively ended any chance the Heat had of advancing beyond group play, as East Lake easily went undefeated to advance to the finals.

Game 2 saw the Heat matched up against Hernando Beach, a much weaker opponent.  The Heat easily took care of business, striking for 8 goals in a repeat of the goal-fest from two weeks ago, as the girls coasted to an 8-0 win.  Sarah and Melody had two each, with Megan, Gaby, Kait, and Haden each adding one to the tally.

Game 3 was only for pride, as the girls faced the Pinellas Raiders.  The team started very strong with Melody finishing a nice cross from Reagan for the first goal.  The Heat had a number of other good shots that could have sealed the results early, but finding the net proved elusive.  Finally, with just few minutes to play in the game, the Heat sealed the win with a 2nd goal, as Tori finished a ball into an open net after a blast by Melody was too tough for the Raider's keeper to handle.  The Raiders scored in the final minute to make things interesting, but the Heat held on for a nice 2-1 victory.

Seminole Fall Festival tournament results...
The Heat won two, and lost one at the Seminole Fall Festival.  Although the girls played well at times, the lack of a consistent offensive attack proved to be too much for the team to overcome as the girls were eliminated during group play.

In Game 1, the Heat piled on the goals against the ACYS Eagles.  The Heat ended up winning 8-0 with goals coming from every direction against the overmatched comp rec ACYS team.  Sarah scored three times, and Meagan twice, with Reagan, Hayden, and Melody each adding one to the tally.

Game 2 was a much tougher game for the Heat against West Pines United from South Florida.  Kait opened the scoring late in the 1st half with a beautiful chip from the right side that sailed out of reach of the West Pines keeper.  Kait added her second goal of the match as she headed home a nice cross from the left by Reagan.  West Pines got one back in the last few minutes to make things interesting, but the Heat held on to win, 2-1.

In the pivotal Game 3, the Heat faced Florida Premier out of Fort Myers, with the winner advancing to the finals.  The teams battled to an even first half scoreless tie.  Midway through the 2nd half Florida Premier got the only goal they would need on a failed clearance by the Heat.  The Heat managed just a single 2nd half shot very late in the game, as a close range header by Meagan sailed over the bar, and Florida Premier took the match 1-0.

CFU Shootout tournament results...
The Heat won one, and lost two very close games at the CFU Shootout to finish third in their group.

Game 1 saw the  Heat meet  the Jacksonville Fury, a team the Heat had never faced.  The girls started slow, but came on strong in the second half, with Melody finishing two very nice goals.  Big Taylor was strong in goal, and the Heat recorded the 2-0 win.

In Game 2, the girls faced one of the state's top teams in the Melbourne Beach Tsunami.  The Tsunami kept up a relentless attack, but strong play by the defense, and a phenomenal game by big Taylor held the Tsunami scoreless for 57 minutes.  Finally, with just 3 minutes to play, the Tsunami netted a goal to take the win 1-0.

Game 3 saw the Heat face local rival FCA Kumba for the first time this season.  The girls started strong, putting together a number of well conceived attacks in the first half, but none of many good chances could find the net, and the first half ended in a scoreless tie.  The 2nd half saw Kumba attack a little more strongly.  About midway through the 2nd half, Kumba scored when the Heat failed to clear a Kumba corner kick.  The Heat couldn't generate much offense the rest of the way against a very fast Kumba defense, and Kumba took the win, 1-0.

The Heat concluded their fall league play this weekend, dropping their Saturday game, 0-3, to the IUS Krush, and then tieing (once again) the OCS Strikers, 1-1.

Saturday's game proved to be a difficult one for the Heat, as they fell behind early by two goals, and could not muster much of an attack against the speedy and skilled Krush. The Krush added another late goal to finish off the Heat 0-3.

Sunday's game was something of a grudge match following a very physical game these two teams played two weeks ago.  The girls fell behind 0-1 about a minute into the match on a defensive mix up.  The Heat pressed hard the rest of the way, with the tieing goal coming just 3 minutes from the end of the game when Reagan half-volleyed a ball from 20 yards just under the cross bar.  The Heat had a couple more good chances in the waning moments, but couldn't quite finish it off, and the game ended tied, 1-1.

Sep
t 16/17
The Heat again found the going tough, in league play over the weekend.  Goal scoring continues to be an issue, and the girls could manage just one goal in the two games.

Saturday saw the Heat play a very even match against a big, physical Stetson team.  After a scoreless first half, Stetson struck first 10 minutes in the 2nd half to take the lead.  The Heat continued to press for the equalizer, with Reagan finally connecting on a well-struck free kick from almost 30 yards out.  Both teams had good chances until the end, but neither could convert, and the game ended tied at 1-1.

Sunday saw the Heat start very strong against CFU, generating many good chances.  However, the back of the net remained elusive for the Heat.  CFU scored on one of their few first half chances to take a 1-0 lead.  The 2nd half saw the Heat generate little in the way of an offensive attack, and CFU closed out a 1-0 victory over the Heat.

Sep
t 9/10
Night and day.  That best describes the Heat performance over the weekend in their two league games.  The Heat fell to the IUS Dragons 0-4 on Saturday in a lackluster performance.  Although the score would indicate a one-sided match, the girls had at least equal possession, and many good opportunities.  However, the Dragons proved to be the better finishing team, scoring on just about every good chance they had.

As uninspired as the play was on Saturday,  the girls turned it around on Sunday in playing the OCS Strikers to a hard fought 0-0 draw.  In a very physical game with some questionable refereeing, the Heat played perhaps their best full game of the season, narrowly missing a number of good chances while holding the Strikers to just a couple weak shots over the entire 80 minutes of play.  The girls should be proud of the quick turnaround from Saturday, and hopefully will look back at today as a turning point in the season.  Go HEAT!

Disney tournament results...
The Heat opened their fall 2006 tourament season in disappointing fashion, losing all 3 games against stiff competition at Disney.  Although the girls played well in spurts, the consistent intensity of all three teams we faced was too much for the Heat on this weekend.  The team has a lot of  hard work ahead to compete consistently against the state's top teams, and hopefully the girls will use this tournament as a motivating factor going forward.

The Heat tied local rival IUS-411, 1-1, in a weather-shortened league game.  Tori (with her first goal as a Heat player!) opened the scoring about 5 minutes into the game by nicely finishing a ball after an IUS defensive mistake.  IUS immediately turned up the pressure and pressed forward, reeling off a number of shots looking for the equalizer.  The Heat also had a number of good chances on counter-attacking opportunities.  IUS finally got the tieing goal about midway into the half on a nice one-touch finish.  The half ended tied at a goal a piece.  The 2nd half was evenly played for about 15 minutes when threatening weather halted the game, and the teams walked away with the 1-1 result.

Aug

The Heat girls opened their fall league season with a disappointing 1-2 loss to CFU-512.  The girls took an early lead on a great cross by Kait that Patricia finished nicely by beating a defender and the keeper. Kait went down with a knee injury late in the half, and the half ended with the Heat up a goal. CFU came back strong in the 2nd half, and tied the game about midway through on short range header that found the back of the net.  CFU continued to press, and netted the game winner with about 4 minutes to play, as the girls could not clear a ball from the box.  The girls had a couple good chances in the final few minutes, but couldn't muster the equalizer.
