CFU
Shootout tournament results...
The
Heat finished up the fall season on a positive note by winning the
championship at the CFU Shootout. The girls went undefeated
enroute to the title, winning two and tieing two.
Game 1 - The
girls faced Spacecoast Storm in a rematch from two weeks ago with the
Heat looking to improve on the 3 goal loss from FSL league play.
This game proved to be a much more even battle. Even so,
Spacecoast held a 1-nil lead until late in the 2nd half until Meagan
rocketed a free kick from 25 yards out that was too hot for the keeper
to handle. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Game 2 - Next
up was East Orange. The team started strong with Melody
converting in the first few minutes to give the Heat a 1-0 lead.
However, a number of other good chances were not converted, and that
would prove costly, as East Orange held tough and converted a goal in
the last 10 minutes of the game to tie score, leaving the team feeling
as if they "gave one away".
Game 3 - Needing
a win to advance to the finals, the girls next faced the U16 CFU
Rage. Although the girls dominated play in both possession and
shots, nothing was on target, and a lone CFU counterattack at the end
of the 1st half produced a Heat foul just outside the box, that was
miscalled by the ref for a PK. CFU converted the PK to take a 1-0
lead into the half. The girls again dominated play in the 2nd
half, but still, no one was finishing. Finally, with 15 minutes
to play, a corner by Natalie was "shouldered" into the net by Taylor to
tie the score. Five minutes later, Meagan played a perfect free
kick into the box that Taylor headed beautifully past the onrushing
keeper for her 2nd goal, which sealed the win, and the Heat's place in
the finals.
Finals - The
Heat again faced Spaceoast in the finals, after they also advanced with
a win and two ties in group play. Again, the Heat started strong,
scoring in the 4th minute, with Noelia sending a nice cross to Melody,
who quickly settled the ball, and finished perfectly into the right
corner. The next 60 minutes was an up and down battle with both
teams generating some good chances, but neither able to convert.
Finally, with 5 minutes to go, Meagan, playing sweeper, settled a ball
at midfield and made a beautiful run (beating three Storm players along
the way) which ended with a 20 yard shot that was perfectly placed into
the left corner. Meagan's goal gave the team the cushion they
needed, and they coasted the rest of the way for the 2-0 win, and the
championship!

FSL
game 10
The Heat closed out their FSL season with a 0-3 loss
to the IUS Elite Krush. While the girls played well in spurts,
the Krush proved once again why they are the area's top team (and one
of the best in the state). After holding the Krush to a scoreless
draw at the half, the Krush were able to up the tempo of play in the
2nd half, and converted three nice goals to take the match.
FSL
games 7,8,9
The Heat were inconsistent, losing to Spacecoast and
Weston by a combined 0-8 score. The team had trouble in both
these games generating any kind of attack, and both these teams pounced
often to convert their chances.
In what would be the only Heat win in FSL play this season, the girls
squeaked out a 1-0 win vs CBS Cyclones. The lone Heat goal came
came midway through the second half as Megan W. played a nice
corner that Taylor was able to strongly volley into the back of the
net. CBS failed to convert a late PK that could have tied the
game, and Kait had an outstanding game as keeper, making a number of
good saves to deny CBS any of their numerous chances.

FSL
games 5 & 6
The Heat opened week 3 of FSL play against Jax Fury
and quickly fell behind by 2 goals before Sarah closed the gap just
prior to half time. The girls carried the momentum into the 2nd
half and quickly tied the score with a goal by Melody. However,
the Fury struck back with ten minutes to play to take a 3-2 lead.
The Heat hung tough and tied the score with just 3 minutes to play, as
Melody scored again. However, the "final minute woes" that have
been plaguing the team this year struck again, as Jax scored in the
final minute to take the win, 4-3. Game 2 saw the Heat come out
strong and outplay Gainesville for much of the first half, which ended
scoreless as the lightning siren sounded. After an hour delay the
two teams continued the battle with Gainesville controlling much of the
second half play. Gainesville struck first with about 7 minutes
to play on a direct free-kick that found the net. The Heat,
however, pressed hard to the the final 5 minutes and a Gainesville foul
just outside the 18 gave the Heat their final chance with less than 2
minutes to play. Meagan struck a perfect ball that found the back
of the net, and the Heat finally broke a long winless streak with the
1-1 tie.

Disney
Showcase Qualifier tournament results...
The
Heat came up empty at Disney, as the girls lost 3 straight in group
play and failed to advance. Although the final game results were
not good, there were some positives to come from the three tough
games. Namely, an offensive attack that has been missing since
the start of this year, started to materialize in games 2 and 3.
Although a goal was not produced, opportunities were generated at times
through some good combination passing and aggressive play.
However, much more consistency will be needed from ALL individual
players in order for the team to accomplish its goals. For game
results, check the schedule page.

FSL
games 3 & 4
The Heat girls again found the going tough against
Region A teams. This weekend Plantation and Team Boca Navy
visited from South Florida and handed the team two tough losses.
In game 1, Plantation opened the scoring early on by converting on a
corner that the Heat could not clear. The 2nd half saw the girls
settle down a bit, and finally Melody tied the score on a nice run at
goal, beating a defender and the keeper with a well-composed shot into
the corner. However, Plantation continued to press, and they
converted a late goal on any another corner that the Heat could not
clear to hand the Heat a 2-1 defeat. Game 2 saw the Heat open the
scoring with Melody getting fouled in the box, and then converting the
PK. However, TBN tied the score on the final play of the 1st half
by converting a free kick. The 2nd half saw TBN add two more
goals, as the Heat could not generate any effective attack to keep the
TBN pressure off the defenders, and the team fell 3-1.

FSL
games 1 & 2
The Heat girls found the going tough in the start of
FSL league play, as Sunrise and West Pines outscored, outmuscled, and
outplayed the Heat to a combined score of 7-2 over the two games.
Sunrise led off with a 4-1 win over the Heat, as the girls started
well, but couldn't hold off the relentlous pressure and movement of a
talented Sunrise team. The girls fell behind 3-0 midway through
the second half, until Taylor played a nice through ball to Mel, who
played a perfect cross to Natalie, who volleyed the ball into the
Sunrise net to close the score to 3-1. Sunrise quickly stepped up
the play and added another goal to close out the win. In game 2,
the Heat gave up two quick goals, and didn't show much in the first
half. The 2nd half saw the team settle down and play West Pines
very evenly. The Heat score came as Sarah volleyed a ball past an
out-of-position West Pines keeper to narrow the deficit to one
goal. The girls narrowly missed 3 good opportunities to tie the
game. But, West Pines held on, and made the most of their fewer
chances, as they added a late goal to close out the 3-1 win.

The Heat girls officially kicked off U15 play today
hosting (along with the IUS Krush) a pair of scrimmages to prep for FSL
league play, which begins next weekend. In game 1, the team
defeated Spacecoast 2-1 in a very closely matched game, with all goals
coming in the 2nd half. Melody and Ashleigh tallied the goals for
the Heat side. Game 2, played in scorching 95 degree heat, pitted
the Heat against Central Brevard. Both teams had a number of good
chances, but, neither could convert, and the teams settled for a 0-0
draw. Notably, big Taylor came up LARGE in goal the entire game in
earning the "clean sheet".

International tournament results...
Game 1 - The
girls faced the SVSC Storm from Texas South. After a slow start,
which saw the Storm jump out to a 1-nil lead in the first few minutes,
the girls settled down and began to dominate play for the rest of the
1st half. Hayden opened the scoring by converting a PK after a
Storm handball in front of the net. Sarah added two goals to put
the Heat up 3-1 at half time. Although the girls continued to
dominate play with over 20 shots, they couldn't find the net for the
first 30 minutes of the 2nd half. And, the Storm made the most of
their few opportunities, netting a nice goal, and converting a PK of
their own, to tie the score with 10 minutes to play. The Heat
stepped up their play in the final minutes as Taylor made two
penetrating runs beating the Storm keeper twice to the right corner to
seal a 5-3 win.
Game 2 - The
Heat squared off against the SW United Red Devils from Canada in their
2nd game. This team proved to be much stronger than the first
game opponent. The girls started strongly, pressuring the Red
Devils into a defensive takedown of Sarah in the box, resulting in an
early Heat PK opportunity that Natalie put solidly in the back of the
net to give the Heat the early lead. The remainder of the first
half was evenly played, until, with just a few minutes left, the Red
Devils tied it up with a nice goal of their own. The weather
turned stormy, and play was halted for an hour, just as the first half
ended. After the long delay, the 2nd half saw the Red Devils
control much of the play, as they generated a number of good chances,
and kept the Heat defending much of the half. But, big Taylor was
very solid in goal, including one diving save with 5 minutes remaining
to keep the game tied. The 2nd half ended with neither able to
score, and the teams walked away with a 1-1 draw.
Game
3 - In game 3, the
Heat played Maryland's 4th ranked MSC Matrix. The game
was played largely in midfield, with both teams getting just a few
scoring chances in each half. The girls generated good
possession, and some good scoring chances but couldn't find the
net. The Matrix, however, made the most of their opportunities,
netting 1 goal in each half to seal a 2-0 win. The Matrix
advanced to the semifinal as the #1 seed, and the Heat, with
their 1-1-1 group play record advanced to the semifinal also, as the #3
seed.
Semifinal - The
semifinal pitted the Heat against #2 seed Canada in a rematch of Game 2.
The game started out much the same as the first match, except this time
Canada netted an early goal to take a 1-nil lead. However, the
Heat
fought back and evened the score about midway through the half as
Taylor (netting her 3rd goal of the tournament), took a nice cross from
Sarah, drove to her left, then struck a beautiful left-footed shot to
the right corner of the goal which the Canada keeper could only
watch. The rest of the half was evenly played, and the half ended
1-1. Unfortunately, the 2nd half turned out much the same as in
the first game between these two teams, as Canada began to physically
dominate a tired Heat team, and thus controlled much of the play.
In a span of just 5 minutes, Canada netted 3 quick goals, and the Red
Devils cruised to a 4-1 win, leaving the girls disappointed, but
looking forward to getting all their players back from vacation
(Patricia, Mel, and Joy), ODP camp (Meg B), and injury (Gaby and
Noelia).
And, also a special thanks to Maggie for stepping in as a guest player
in the first 3 games, helping to shore up the defense and midfield.
