Lakeland
tournament results...
The Heat completed their spring 2006 tournament
schedule by reaching the championship finals at Lakeland before losing
in a double overtime thriller to state cup Lakeland Shockers,
0-1.
The Heat faced some new teams, all from Region C, and won three
straight in group
play prior to the finals. Details are below.
GAME
1 - The team opened against the Brandon Flames and
started strong with a 3-0 win. Kait, Reagan and Annalisa (with
her first goal!) provided the scoring punch, as the girls
dominated from start to finish.
GAME
2 - The next game saw the Heat face a tough HCU Blue
team. The first half was scoreless, with the Heat generating many
good chances, but they were unable to finish. The lone score of
the game came on half volley by Reagan off a corner kick just 3 minutes
into the 2nd half. HCU pressed hard in the last few minutes, but
big Taylor was solid in goal, stopping all chances, and the Heat closed
out a 1-0 win.
GAME
3 -
Needing just a tie to adavnce to the finals, the girls came out strong
and dominated New Tampa the entire way. Kait scored on her 2nd
header of the weekend at the end of the first half, and Meagan W.
provided the clincher midway through the 2nd half as the Heat again
cruised to a 2-0 win to advance to the championship finals. Also
notable was big Taylor recording her 5th straight shutout in goal for
the Heat over two weekends of tournament play.
Championship
Final - The girls faced off against the Lakeland
Shockers, a top state cup team from Region C, in the finals. The
Heat knew this team well, having played them to a 0-0 tie in February
at Disney. This game would turn out just the same, with these two
teams battling to a 0-0 draw through the 70 minutes of regulation, and
another 5 minute overtime. Finally, two minutes into the 2nd
overtime, Lakeland netted what would be the game winner as one of their
skilled forwards put away a short range shot. The Heat battled
hard for the remaining 3 minutes, but couldn't get it done, and
Lakeland walked away the winner. Overall, the Heat played very
well, and again proved that we can compete with the best teams from
across the state.

Palm
Bay tournament results...
The Heat competed this weekend in Melbourne in a
tournament that attracted many of the best U13 teams in the state, as
the tournment's schedule made it an ideal tune-up for round of 16 State
Cup play.
GAME
1 - The team opened against Melbourne Beach Tsunami, one
of the top teams in the state. The girls held their own again
this very speedy, highly skilled team. After trailing 0-1 at the
half, Tsunami finished two more goals in the 2nd half, and cruised to a
3-0 win.
GAME
2 - The team faced MEGU Fusion next, another strong
State Cup team from Melbourne. The girls again played well, but
gave up a goal late in the 1st half on a nice MEGU cross and finish,
and MEGU led at the half 1-0. The Heat played very strong in the
2nd half and had two near misses that could have tied the game and
changed the momentum. But, MEGU held firm, and scored a 2nd goal
late in the game to close out the victory 2-0, and relegate the Heat to
the consolation bracket.
GAME
3 -
Although disappointed thus far, the girls found plenty of the
motivation in facing local rival CFU in the first consolation
game. The girls finally found the scoring touch midway through
the first half with Gabriella finishing a nice cross by Katlyn.
CFU pressured the Heat the rest of the way in search of the
equalizer. But, it never came, and the girls squeaked out a 1-0
win to qualify for the consolation final against Rockledge, the lone
U14 team competing in this difficult division.
GAME
4 - Already satisfied having defeated CFU for the 2nd
time at tournament this spring, the girls found motivation again facing
Rockledge, a team that had just beaten IUS, 4-2 (IUS is another
local rival of the Heat). The girls came out fired up to better
IUS's result, and they struck
first about midway through the 1st half as Megan W. had a spectacular
finish off a nice thru-ball from Reagan. The girls struck again
about midway thru the second half as Reagan converted a direct
free-kick over an outstretched keeper. Gabriella and Sarah
combined to finished the scoring at about 3 minutes from the finish as
Sarah took a breakaway to goal and powered a shot that was
partially saved by the keeper only to have Gabriella finish into the
open goal and give the Heat the 3-0 win. Also noteworthy was the
outstanding goalkeeper work by (big) Taylor H. who had a number of
outstanding saves to secure the shutout.

The Heat lost a hard fought game to IUS U14, 2-1.
Katlyn opened the scoring midway through the 1st half with a
well-struck, looping shot from 25 yards that caught the IUS keeper out
of position. The girls held the 1-0 lead until the half.
However, IUS came back to tie the score just a few seconds into the 2nd
half on a Heat defensive breakdown. IUS pressured the remainder
of the game going with the wind, but the Heat hung tough with superb
goalie play by Shelby. The Heat, without two starters, and only
two subs, wilted late in the game, and IUS finished the game-winning
goal with just 4 minutes to play, driving a hard ball past a diving
Shelby.

The Heat chalked up another league win today with another
dominating performance against Stetson. Stetson opened the
scoring about midway through the 1st half after a failed clearance led
to an easy goal. After that, is was all Heat. Playing
into a 15mph wind, the girls connected for two goals before the
half. Gaby finished the first, and Katlyn the second off a nice
feed from Taylor to give the Heat a 2-1 halftime lead. Going with
the wind, the 2nd half was all Heat. Although the girls couldn't
finish any of the good chances they had, the superior skill and
possession game wore down Stetson, and the game ended as a 2-1 win for
the Heat.

The Heat defeated Seminole 3-0 to earn their first league
win of the season. The girls dominated play in the first half,
but as has been the trend recently, could not convert the many good
chances that they generated, and the half ended scoreless.
Finally, in the 2nd half the chances turned to goals! Gaby opened
the scoring beating both the left defender and the keeper, with a nice
shot into the lower right corner of the net. Kait followed with
another good 1v1 run up the middle, followed by a confident finish, to
give the Heat a 2-0 advantage. Reagan finished the scoring with a
toe-tap past the keeper to give the Heat the 3-0 win.
Apr 1
The Heat traveled to New Smyrna Beach to take on South
Volusia County. The game started well, with the girls dominating
the 1st ten minutes. The Heat pressure and skill caught SVC
offguard, and ultimately resulted in a PK from a hand ball in the box
that Katlyn converted for a 1-0 Heat lead. However, SVC picked
their physical game up a bit, and shortly thereafter, converted their
own PK, after a Heat defensive lapse, to tie the game. The
remainder of the game was largely a midfield battle with both sides
only generating just a couple of good chances that neither team could
convert, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
