DISNEY
RESULTS...
The Heat girls completed a successful Disney
Spring Holiday tournament, playing against their highest level of
competition to date. The girls won 2 and tied 1 to win their
group and advance to the
semifinals, before losing to Atlanta Fire Elite, one of Georgia's top
5 teams. See the individual game details below.
GAME
1 - The team opened against Region Cup rival Spacecoast
Storm
with a 1-0 win. Reagan converted a first half PK after a hand
ball in the box to give the Heat all the margin they would need.
The girls had a number of other good chances against a tough Spacecoast
defense. Kait registered the 1st of her 3 straight shutouts with
some stellar work at keeper.
GAME
2 - The team faced the highly touted Lakeland Shockerz
next. Lakeland is one of the strongest State Cup teams out of the
Tampa area. The girls had a difficult time generating much
offense
against a very aggressive Shockerz team, getting just two good
opportunities the entire game. Lakeland controlled the midfield
play,
but could not finish. Kait again put back all attempts, and the
Heat did what they needed to do, and held on for the nil-nil tie.
GAME
3 -
In this crucial game, the Heat faced Tophat Gold from Georgia, a
top State Cup team from north of the border. Tophat had defeated
Lakeland 2-0 in their first game, so the Heat knew they would have
their hands full. The Heat faced a must-win situation to advance,
with Tophat needing just a tie. Finally, the midfield game of the
Heat began to show some spark in the first half, in a very evenly play,
up and down game. At the 20 minute mark, Gaby finished a
beautiful 25 yard shot over an outstretched keeper to give the Heat the
lead 1-0, which they held until the half. The 2nd half saw Tophat
continue to press for the tieing goal. They could not convert
numerous good chances, including a questionably awarded PK with just 3
minutes to play. Kait recorded her 3rd straight shutout, again
anchoring a solid defensive effort.
GAME
4, semifinal - The Heat faced Atlanta Fire Elite,
another top State Cup team from Georgia. The girls started strong
with some good ball control, but the Fire quickly took over with
superior speed, ball skill, and physical play. The Heat again
relied on outstanding keeper play from Kait to stay close, until the
33rd minute when the Fire converted to take a 1 goal lead into the
half. The girls again hung tough until midway through the 2nd
half when the Fire scored again on a nice cross for a 2-0 lead.
The Fire added one more late goal to put the game out of reach.
Hats off to the Fire team for showing the Heat girls a level of play
that we will be striving to attain over the coming months.
