State Rankings Update - The
Heat are now ranked 22nd
in the state of Florida, based on our recent victory in the Palm
Bay Spring Challenge. This ties us with FCA Kumba, who we
defeated there. Note that Kumba will drop below us after Memorial
Day, as points they earned last Memorial Day are eliminated on the one
year rolling basis that is used to accumulate points. Awesome job
girls, on this great accomplishment for a 1st year team!

The Heat team traveled to Vero Beach for our final spring season
game. There, the girls closed the season on a very positive note
with a convincing 2-0 win against the Region B Cup champion Vero Beach
Vipers. Two great scoring combinations between Patricia and
Gabrielle (each girl scored a goal, with the other assisting) put the
Heat up 2-nil in the first 15 minutes. The girls dominated the
rest of the way with great defensive play from the back four.
They also narrowly missed 2 other great scoring chances. The game
was important because it really showed the overall team
improvement from two previous losses to this team.

The Heat lost a hard fought game to CFU 0-3. In a game that was
much tighter than the score would indicate, the girls held the game
scoreless for the first 45 minutes. Playing a new, tight
defensive formation, the team frustrated CFU's offensive attack, and
generated some good counter-attacking opportunites. The winning
goal for CFU came midway into the 2nd half off a 25 yard "rocket" shot
from the CFU midfield. With 5 minutes left, and nothing to lose,
the coaches came out of their defensive posture, and generated some
good opportunities offensively, but couldn't finish. CFU closed
the scoring with two late goals against the Heat's opened up defense.

The Heat battled a tough Spacecoast Storm team to a 1-1 tie.
Spacecoast had previously beaten the Heat twice, and things started out
looking difficult again as the Storm scored just 3 minutes into the
game on a defensive breakdown up the middle. But, the girls
showed resolve and played out the 1st half very evenly, but still
trailing 0-1. The 2nd half was an up and down, somehwat sloppy
game with neither team able to mount much of an offensive attack until
about 22 minutes into half. Then, Kait chest-trapped a weak
clearance by the Storm about 25 yards out, and moved forward to just
inside the 18, where she strongly volleyed in the equalizer. The
last 8 minutes saw both teams get a few chances, but neither was able
to convert, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Heat lost to a very tough Melbourne Beach Tsunami team 0-2.
The defense only gave up a PK in the 1st half, and a 30 yard high
arching shot for a goal in the 2nd half. However, the Tsunami
controlled play for most of the game as the Heat had a difficult time
generating any kind of sustained offensive attack against the
relentless Tsunami pressure.

May 1st -- Maitland Heat
are Champions at the Palm Bay Spring Challenge
The Heat girls won 3 of 4 games at the Palm Bay tournament and
brought home the Champions trophy in the girls U12
National Division. The team played inspired soccer as the
girls continued to show dramatic improvement in team play from all the
hard work they have all put in this spring. The girls were joined
by 3 guest players; Sammi, Sydney and Melody who solidified the team
after the recent loss of one our top defenders, Meagan B, due to injury.
Game
1 vs Jax. Revolution - The
Heat dominated this game
from start to finish. Reagan opened the scoring about midway
through the 1st half. Megan W. then closed out the game early in
the 2nd half, sealing the victory. The Heat had many other good
chances, but had to be satisfied with the 2-0 victory.
Game
2 vs Florida Thunder -
In a very closely contested game, the Heat dropped the decision to the
Thunder 1-2. The Thunder opened the scoring, and led at the half
by a goal. The Heat countered about midway through the 2nd half
with Caroline netting the equalizer off a feed from Sydney, who had
made a beautiful penetrating run up the middle. Although the Heat
outplayed the Thunder for the remainder of the 2nd half, they couldn't
convert a winning goal. The Thunder got the game winner about 5
minutes from the finish. The Heat's 1-1 record, however,
qualified us for the Semifinal games.
Game
3, Semifinal vs FCA Kumba
- This semifinal game saw the 2nd and 3rd seeded Kumba and Heat face
off in what would be a classic come-from-behind victory for the
Heat. The girls fell behind 0-2 by midway through the 1st half
after 2 "ugly" goals by the Kumba. However, ugly or not, they
count the same, and the Heat limped into halftime with the two goal
deficit. The coaches sensed that we had been outplaying the
Kumba, and urged the girls keep their heads high, and keep working
hard, and eventually the results would come. And come they
did! Gabrielle opened the Heat scoring 6 minutes into the half,
one touching a beautiful cross from Patricia into the back of the
net. This goal inspired the girls, as they totally dominated the
remainder of the half. However, after almost countless close
chances, the Heat still found themselves down 1-2 with just 3 minutes
remaining. Then, Patricia took a through ball deep in the Kumba
zone that turned into a 50-50 ball with the Kumba keeper.
Patricia got the shot off, but the Kumba keeper largely blocked
it. Gabrielle was there again to finish the rebound, tying the
score. Golden goal overtime followed with the momentum now all
with the Heat. Just 4 minutes into the 1st overtime, Gabrielle
again had a breakaway down the right side and rocketed a shot the Kumba
keeper couldn't handle. Gabrielle was right there again to rip
the rebound into the back of the net to seal the victory, and lead the
girls into the final with her "hat-trick".
Game
4,
Final vs Florida Thunder - This game saw a rematch from
Saturday with the Heat ready to avenge their earlier defeat.
However, the game started largely for the Thunder, who pretty much
controlled play through the first half. Only the outstanding
goalkeeping from Alison kept us in the game. The game remained
scoreless until halftime. The 2nd half saw the Heat come out and
finally match the physical play that the Thunder had been
showing. About 10 minutes into the half, the Heat took a series
of 3 successive corner kicks. On the third, Patricia headed a
beautiful corner by Caroline that the Thunder keeper initially saved,
but couldn't hold. Patricia was right there to finish her own
rebound, putting the Heat up 1-0. The remainder of the game
was close with the Heat and Thunder getting a a few good chances
each. The Heat dominated the final 5 minutes and earned the CHAMPIONSHIP
1-0 victory
